The Technology and Human Resources for Industry Programme recently announced that it would be matching grants to the Department of Human Genetics at the University of Cape town for our Gene Tracking Project to identify genetic mutations causing retinal degeneration in South African families. They are generously matching the grant from our Foundation and the grant from the American Foundation Fighting Blindness for 1999. This means that a tremendous amount of R920 000 will be spent on the project this year. If we can increase the funding from the South African Foundation, perhaps the total amount will treble again for the year 2000. What a good way to start the millennium!
